A couple of weeks after already sharing a catchy single in our pages, SOM have officially released their third full-length album, ‘Let the Light In’, now available via Pelagic Records. The long-awaited follow-up to 2022’s ‘The Shape of Everything’, this new release marks a transformative moment for the band—musically, emotionally, and personally.

The album’s creation was shaped by significant change. Following the departure of drummer Duncan Rich, bassist Justin Forrest took over drums, while vocalist/guitarist Will Benoit moved to bass. This reshuffle gave guitarists Joel Reynolds and Mike Repasch-Nieves more creative freedom, resulting in a record that feels both expansive and tightly focused. Most of the album was re-recorded following this shift, and the result is SOM’s most cohesive work yet.

Across eight tracks, ‘Let the Light In’ blends alternative/rock x post-metal weight with shoegaze textures and introspective lyrics. Songs like “Give Blood” and “Nightmares” showcase the band’s knack for emotional depth through immersive soundscapes, while “Chemicals” and “The Place That I Belong” strike a powerful balance between melancholy and melodic beauty. The closing track, “The Light,” offers a moment of calm—a fitting end to an album that explores darkness while searching for clarity.

While ‘Let the Light In’ maintains SOM’s signature “doom pop” x « dreamgaze » sound, it pushes further into personal reflection and catharsis. Each track feels like a sonic journey, capturing both vulnerability and strength.

Somewhere around the corner between Deftones, Failure, HOLY FAWN, Hum, Nothing, SLOW CRUSH or Spotlights and available now on streaming platforms, Bandcamp, and the Pelagic Records store, ‘Let the Light In’ is a mesmerizing, deeply human album that marks a bold evolution for SOM—and a must-listen for fans of atmospheric rock and emotionally resonant music.
