A standout discovery of recent years for the Score A/V editorial team—further cemented a few months ago with a bizarre and chilling split vinyl alongside LLNN (also released via Pelagic Records)—Sugar Horse haven’t been idle. The Anglo-Saxon experimental doom/post-noise/shoegaze/sludge-metal outfit recently returned with a brand new full-length.
Titled ‘The Grand Scheme Of Things’, the album sees the band taking a deliberate step sideways, crafting a sound that straddles the grooves between Dirge, Generation of Vipers, Old Man Gloom, Pijn, Insect Ark, Oceansize, and Spotlights. The result is a bold and unconventional statement, as expansive as it is genre-defying.
This album represents a break—or rather, a deliberate detour—from what one might expect from us… assuming anyone expects anything at all. (Sugar Horse)
More direct and concise, the new tracks cut straight to the point. Most notably, the band embraces a sound that is noticeably less “metallic” than before.
Even though we love being a bit rough around the edges and provocative, this time we really wanted to explore a more melodic, song-driven side. For us, it was above all a songwriting challenge.
We’ve already done the whole endlessly stretched-out space rock thing. It would’ve been easy to stay in that lane. But that’s not Sugar Horse’s DNA — we thrive on difficulty and taking the scenic route. (SH)
