The original « Beyond I » (featuring vocals from Mariam Wallentin) and « Beyond II »—which includes a contribution from acclaimed American cult saxophonist Colin Stetson (known for work with Bon Iver, Sinéad O’Connor, and Tom Waits)—were cornerstone tracks on ‘The Long Road North’, an album praised for its intricate layering and emotional weight. These songs capture Cult of Luna’s trademark blend of heavy riffs, textured soundscapes, and brooding intensity. The new variations do more than simply extend that story—they enrich it, weaving fresh textures and emotional resonance into an already immersive universe.

Guitarist and vocalist Fredrik Kihlberg shared insights into this evolving saga, emphasizing the band’s intent to push the boundaries of their sound while maintaining the thematic continuity that has become synonymous with their work. The collaboration with A.A. Williams on « Beyond IV » introduces a poignant contrast to the band’s heavy instrumentation, her ethereal voice lending a fragile beauty that complements Cult of Luna’s dense sonic architecture.

“Back when we recorded ‘The Long Road North’ we had the idea to make different versions of « Beyond » – some with vocals and some instrumental – and have them appear as interludes on the album. Unfortunately they couldn’t all fit on the album so we are happy to share them with you now.”

The live rendition of « Beyond V » offers fans a raw and immediate experience, capturing the band’s dynamic stage presence and the visceral power of their performances—a reminder of why Cult of Luna remains a pivotal force within the post-metal genre.

With these new tracks, Cult of Luna invite listeners further into the expansive “Beyond” universe—an evolving musical narrative that defies simple categorization and continues to challenge and captivate its audience.
