Nearly a decade after a solid debut album (‘Eras Lost’) that called for confirmation, Minneapolis post-metal/doom/progressive/sludge quintet Earthrise break their long silence with the stunning ‘Until We Rest Beneath the Winter Way’—a towering 71-minute album that reasserts their presence with force, nuance, and purpose.

Drawing sonic comparisons to genre pillars like Cult of Luna, Rosetta, The Ocean, and Generation of Vipers, the American band carve out a singular identity with a release that is both musically expansive and conceptually profound.

At the heart of the album lies the tragic story of Laika, the first living being launched into orbit. ‘UWRBTWW’ transforms this overlooked chapter of space history into a cinematic post-metal opera, exploring Laika’s journey from capture to her final, lonely moments in orbit. Through a series of sweeping, emotionally-charged tracks, Earthrise interlace themes of political pressure, scientific ambition, and the quiet horror of sacrifice in the name of progress.

Standout tracks like “From Below,” “Our Work in the Stars Cannot Wait,” and the devastating closer “Tears of Burning Light” serve as narrative milestones, anchoring the album’s arc in atmosphere, scale, and emotional depth.

‘Until We Rest Beneath the Winter Way’ is self-released and available now in digital formats, with a 2xLP vinyl edition shipping in spring 2023 (due to pressing plant delays). Stream the full album and order physical/digital versions below.
