Liverpool-based math rock trio Alpha Male Tea Party have announced the release of their long-awaited fifth album, Reptilian Brain, out October 3rd, 2025 via Big Scary Monsters (Delta Sleep, THREE TRAPPED TIGERS, Totorro, yndi halda…). The record marks the band’s first new material in five years, following 2020’s acclaimed Infinity Stare, and signals a striking evolution in their sound.

For the first time in their career, the band are incorporating vocals and lyrics as a central element of their music. Known for their dynamic, complex, and often playful instrumental compositions, Alpha Male Tea Party are stepping into a bold new chapter.

The album was produced by Mark Roberts (BLACK PEAKS, DELTA SLEEP, VOWER) and represents both a continuation and a reinvention of the band’s distinctive math rock identity.

A Shift in Voice

Speaking about the decision to introduce vocals, guitarist and vocalist Tom Peters explains:

“It started to become clear that we wanted to use our voices to speak more directly. We found ourselves feeling like we had more to say, and communicating that through music alone wasn’t enough anymore.”

This creative leap can already be heard in the album’s first two singles.

The Singles

“Battle Crab”, released in July, was the first taste of Alpha Male Tea Party’s new era. A frenetic, layered track that balances angular riffs with lyrical anxiety, it reflects on nightlife aggression and the desire to avoid toxic validation-seeking friendships.

Bassist Ben Griffiths describes it as:

“The anxious person’s view of nightlife violence and trying not to surround yourselves with friends who only want validation through starting fights. It’s about saying, ‘Leave me alone, I just want to see if the jukebox has any Steely Dan.’”

“Since the release of Infinity Stare, we’ve been pretty damn busy with things like grouting, tiling, buying sensible furniture and, above all, writing new tunes. To further complicate matters we’ve added vocals into the dense but sweet sponge pudding that is our sound. Like a toffee sauce, if you will. Here’s the first example of such a delicacy. Devour at will.”

The second single, “A Terrible Day to Have Eyes”, arrived in August. Stark, emotionally charged, and lyrically raw, the track confronts themes of grief and the scars it leaves behind.

Tom Peters reflects:

A Terrible Day to Have Eyes is a song about the permanent and inescapable trauma that is inflicted in moments of sudden grief. It comes from a very specific story (that I’ll be keeping to myself) I was once told that had a profound effect on me when I was younger.”

Looking Ahead

Reptilian Brain promises to be both familiar and transformative—retaining the intricate technicality that has defined Alpha Male Tea Party’s math rock reputation while breaking new ground with vocals, lyricism, and emotional weight.

With two powerful singles already out in the world, anticipation is high for the full release in October.
