After nearly a decade away from the full-length format, Boston post-metal visionaries Junius are finally back. On June 26, the band will release ‘Sotera’ via Prosthetic Records (Dreamwell, PUPIL SLICER, Sunrot…) – which is now part of MNRK Heavy Group (Crowbar, High On Fire, Rolo Tomassi….) – their first album since 2017’s critically acclaimed ‘Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light’ and a record that marks both a creative rebirth and a bold new chapter in the band’s evolution.
“It feels like a rebirth for the band” and “is an act of devotion as much as it is a piece of music”
Leading the charge is the powerful new single, « The Oracle » an expansive and emotionally charged composition that perfectly encapsulates Junius‘ signature fusion of atmospheric shoegaze, post-metal grandeur, and spiritual depth. Accompanied by a rare band-focused video, the track introduces listeners to one of the central figures inhabiting the mythological and symbolic landscape of Sotera.
« The Oracle deals with judgment, not moral judgment, but truth » explains vocalist and guitarist Joseph E. Martinez
That tension between revelation and neglect sits at the heart of both the song and the album itself. Produced by Martinez alongside Tom Syrowski (Mastodon), ‘Sotera’ exchanges the cosmic catastrophes and existential themes that shaped earlier Junius releases for something more immediate and transformative. Drawing heavily from archetypes of the divine feminine, the album explores restoration, balance, resurrection, and spiritual awakening through a cast of symbolic figures including « Hekate », « Medea », « Lucifera », » The Oracle », and « The Initiatrix ».
Named after the Greek feminine form of « savior » or « protector », ‘Sotera’ unfolds as a sweeping musical invocation. Dense yet luminous, crushing yet deeply meditative, the album finds Junius operating at the peak of their creative powers. Their trademark ability to balance overwhelming heaviness with transcendent beauty remains intact, but the songwriting feels more purposeful, more mature, and perhaps more personal than ever before.
If « The Oracle » is any indication, Junius have not merely returned : they have emerged renewed. In a landscape increasingly crowded with post-metal imitators, Sotera promises to reaffirm why the band has long occupied a singular space between post-rock, shoegaze, and metal. Nearly ten years later, the wait appears to have been worth it.
« The Oracle watches from up high, seeing civilization get corrupted and drift further away from her ».
