5 years after ‘Distant Populations’, Quicksand return with the kind of statement few legacy bands can still deliver: urgent, forward-thinking and fully alive. With the announcement of their new album ‘Bring On The Psychics’ and the release of two new singles – “Get To It” and “Regenerate” – the New York trio once again prove that evolution and identity can coexist.
Scheduled for release on July 17 via Equal Vision Records (Boysetsfire, drowningman, Refused, snapcase…), ‘Bring On The Psychics’ feels less like a nostalgic comeback and more like a genuine reinvention – reconnecting the raw tension of Quicksand’s ‘90s foundations – still led by the man, the myth, the legend… Walter Schreifelds (Gorilla Biscuits, Youth Of To Day, Rival Schools…) – with the textured, exploratory direction of their later years.
“Get To It” immediately reminds listeners why the band remain so influential. Dense, groove-driven and razor-sharp, the single balances angular aggression with hypnotic melody. Produced and mixed by Jon Markson, it sounds massive, contemporary and refreshingly organic.
« It’s tough to talk about your own music and what it means, not only because I sometimes don’t understand it myself but in a way it robs the listener of their own interpretation. So if you don’t want that, read no further.
Otherwise, with ‘Get To It’ and ‘Regenerate’ we wanted to do something high-energy and straightforward with a positive feeling. ‘Get To It’ is about ‘getting to it’, poking holes in the excuses for standing still. Procrastination is something I’ve struggled with my whole life so I’m always looking for a new mantra to help overcome my tendency to put things off”« ‘Regenerate’ is about finding new paths forward. It’s a theme I think we all return to. No matter how well you play it, life will keep taking things away from you. It sucks but this is how we learn and grow as people, so it might be we’re living the most when faced with having to get back up from a hard hit »
“Regenerate,” meanwhile, explores the band’s more atmospheric and introspective side. Built around immersive textures and controlled dynamics, the track expands Quicksand’s sonic palette without sacrificing the rhythmic tension that defines their sound. Together, the two singles feel complementary: one direct and explosive, the other expansive and reflective. Both unmistakably Quicksand.
What continues to separate Quicksand from the countless bands they inspired is their refusal to become static. While many veteran acts lean on nostalgia, Walter Schreifels, Sergio Vega and Alan Cage still approach songwriting with curiosity and risk. That mindset appears deeply embedded within ‘Bring On The Psychics’, an album inspired in part by the visionary thinking of Carl Sagan and shaped around reflection, reinvention and forward momentum.
At a time when many comeback records feel designed for nostalgia cycles, ‘Bring On The Psychics’ already sounds like something far more purposeful: a band refusing to repeat itself while still sounding entirely like Quicksand.
“I’m really psyched to play these songs live,” Schreifels summarizes. “I feel really fortunate to still be playing music with these guys and be able to take it to different places.”
